Important Notice: Pleasure Craft Licences

Notice – November 2010: The Canada Border Services Agency is no longer responsible for issuing pleasure craft licences. You can get a free pleasure craft licence by applying to Transport Canada. To learn more about pleasure craft licensing, visit Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca, or call the Boating Safety InfoLine at 1-800-267-6687.

Beginning April 1, 2006, the Canada Border Services Agency will no longer be responsible for issuing pleasure craft licences. This responsibility will be transferred to Service Canada.

Service Canada will continue to provide this service free of charge and licences will continue to be transferable to any subsequent owner of a vessel.

Service Canada can provide more comprehensive service to Canadians, with almost three times the number of service locations available through the CBSA.

In addition, Service Canada will offer an electronic application system and will eventually provide enhanced search capabilities to assist law enforcement and search and rescue agencies in the event of emergencies.

For a Service Canada location near you call 1 800 O-Canada (1 800 622-6232) or visit the Service Canada Web site.

The CBSA will continue to accept applications until March 31, 2006 but only temporary licences will be issued.

  • Temporary licences will be valid until June 15, 2006.
  • Vessel registration numbers assigned by the CBSA will not change when you apply for a permanent licence through Service Canada.
